Rahm collapses at the U.S. Open and misses the cut

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm's hopes of winning his second British Open were dashed after a significant collapse in his second round. Rahm carded an eight-over-par performance, bringing his total score to +6 and consequently missing the cut.

This marks the first time Rahm has failed to advance to the weekend rounds of a major championship since the 2024 PGA Championship. The golfer, who had been in strong form coming into the tournament, was only four strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark through five holes. However, his performance deteriorated from the sixth hole onwards, with six bogeys and a double bogey on the 16th at Shinnecock Hills.

Rahm's unexpected downfall contrasted sharply with his flawless first round, where he was the only player among 156 participants to finish without a bogey. He had been riding a wave of success, including a second-place finish at the previous major and a dominant showing in the LIV Golf league, where he leads and has secured two titles this season, propelling him to eighth in the world rankings.

In his 38 major championship appearances prior to this year's U.S. Open, Rahm had missed the cut five times. The last instance was at the 2024 PGA Championship. He also failed to make the cut in 2018 at both the Open Championship and the U.S. Open, and in 2017 at the U.S. Open. This year's Open marked the tenth anniversary of his major debut, with aspirations of securing his third major title.

Among other Spanish competitors, only Ángel Hidalgo made the cut, finishing at +3 in 49th place. David Puig (+9) and Rocco Repetto (+17) also did not advance.
