Rahul Gandhi will be face of INDIA bloc in 2029, Congress leader says

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal has sought to end uncertainty over who will represent the INDIA bloc in the 2029 elections, saying Rahul Gandhi will be its face.

“Nobody should create any such confusion. Rahul Gandhi will be the face of the INDIA alliance,” Venugopal told reporters on Sunday. He was responding to reports that supporters of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, or TVK, were promoting Vijay as a possible prime ministerial candidate. Venugopal said TVK itself had not made such a demand, according to PTI.

The debate grew after posters appeared in parts of Thoothukudi, a port and industrial city in Tamil Nadu, carrying the words “Tomorrow’s PM” alongside Vijay’s image. The posters were put up by TVK functionary Sudhakar, who recently joined the party after leaving the AIADMK. TVK leaders then backed the idea of Vijay as a 2029 candidate, with PWD minister Aadhav Arjuna saying the country’s highest constitutional office should be held by a leader from Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu minister KA Sengottaiyan reiterated the party’s position on Friday. “As far as we are concerned, our leader is very clear. Tamil Nadu has voted with faith in him..” he said. The comments angered Congress ministers, who threatened to resign from Vijay’s state cabinet. Tamil Nadu Congress president B. Manickam Tagore had earlier accused some TVK leaders of still operating in “fan-club mode.”

Venugopal also praised Rahul Gandhi’s campaigns on issues involving students, farmers and young people. “It is the fight he is leading that is being discussed the most in India today, whether it is for students, farmers, or the youth. Everyone has accepted that,” he said. Venugopal described Gandhi as the country’s most prominent and widely loved leader, and said the INDIA bloc was moving forward despite competing against one another in some states.
