Rail cable theft ring busted in Romania; suspects burned cables for metal

A significant investigation targeting a ring involved in stealing railway infrastructure materials and committing waste-related offenses has resulted in 21 searches across the Romanian counties of Arad, Timiș, Hunedoara, and Alba. The operation focuses on allegations that employees of companies working on railway rehabilitation and modernization systematically stole and burned CFR cables to recover valuable metals.

According to the Romanian Police, the criminal activity is believed to have been ongoing since May 1, 2026. Suspects allegedly extracted conductor material, specifically cables from the old CFR infrastructure, and then sold them to individuals aware of their illicit origin. These materials were transported to an unauthorized site without adhering to legal waste transport conditions.

At the unauthorized location, the stolen cables were subjected to thermal processing, involving burning with improvised tools and installations. The primary goal was to separate and extract ferrous and non-ferrous metals, particularly copper and aluminum. Investigators noted that the unauthorized burning of the cable's polymeric insulation released uncontrolled emissions of pollutants and toxic microparticles into the atmosphere, posing risks to the environment and public health. The resulting waste was also disposed of illegally, either buried or dumped into the Mureș River.

The recovered metals were subsequently sold repeatedly to a scrap metal collection center. To conceal the illegal origin of the materials and circumvent regulations concerning the acquisition of railway infrastructure components, falsified goods accompanying notes were reportedly used. Authorities have documented 224 criminal offenses related to this scheme. Three men have been detained for 24 hours as the investigation continues.
