Finnish hockey icon Raimo Helminen is set to embark on a new coaching adventure this summer, taking the helm of the Finnish national team at the inaugural 3ICE World Cup in Belfast. This novel tournament, scheduled for July, will feature a fast-paced 3-on-3 format, a departure from the traditional game that promises exciting, high-octane action.

Helminen, currently the head coach of SaiPa in the Finnish Liiga, will lead a Finnish squad against formidable international competition. The tournament boasts talent from former NHL stars, with two-time Stanley Cup winner Johnny Oduya coaching Sweden and four-time champion Larry Murphy leading Canada. The participation of powerhouses like the USA and Canada underscores the prestige and competitive nature of this new international event.

The 3ICE series, which has been played in the United States during the NHL's summer break since 2022, is now expanding its reach globally. This World Cup marks a significant milestone for the league, founded by former NHL player E.J. Johnston, as it introduces a national team competition to its repertoire. The tournament's unique rules, including two eight-minute periods and no stoppages, are designed to maximize continuous play and engagement.

While Helminen focuses on this international challenge, his club team, SaiPa, is currently battling in the Finnish Liiga playoffs. As a silver medalist from the previous year, SaiPa is once again vying for the championship, currently engaged in a tight semifinal series.
