Rain and wind batter Lithuania as meteorologist warns the weekend is only getting started

Lithuania is facing another unsettled weekend as a cyclone named Vilja approaches with heavier rain, strong winds and possible thunderstorms, meteorologist Elvyra Latvėnaitė says.

Rain will fall intermittently on Saturday, with the heaviest conditions expected in western Lithuania and locally in southern districts. Thunderstorms and small hail are also possible. Westerly and southwesterly winds will reach 8 to 13 meters per second, with gusts of 15 to 20 meters per second. Along the coast, gusts could rise to 21 to 23 meters per second.

Lithuania’s hydrometeorological service has issued a hazardous-level wind warning for parts of the country. Gusts in the southeastern Baltic and Curonian Lagoon area could reach 20 to 25 meters per second. Strong winds have already led to restrictions on cargo handling in the port.

Another one, currently only a small cyclone, named Vilja, is already very close. Once again, there will be heavier, and in some places intense, rain.

Residents are advised to remove or secure objects from balconies and yards and avoid parking cars near trees. Saturday temperatures are expected to reach 14 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Rain and strong winds will continue into Sunday, although daytime rain should become more intermittent. Winds will remain powerful, with nighttime gusts of up to 20 meters per second on the coast. Monday and Tuesday should bring a brief lull, and temperatures could reach 24 degrees in some areas on Tuesday. From Wednesday, rain will return, becoming heavier in many places on Thursday, when daytime temperatures are forecast at 16 to 18 degrees.
