Rain expected to continue through Taiwan’s first school week as tropical disturbances form

Taiwan’s first school week could bring near-continuous rain, meteorologist Lin De-en warned, as several tropical disturbances develop within a broad low-pressure belt.

Lin, who holds a doctorate in atmospheric science from National Taiwan University, said rainfall in southern Taiwan would become more concentrated and heavier from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3. Lowland areas could receive more rain than the mountains, according to the latest information from Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration.

The Kaohsiung-Pingtung region is expected to see the most significant rainfall from Aug. 31 through Sept. 2. The rain may occur beyond the usual afternoon hours and could come with short-duration downpours, lightning, thunderstorms and strong winds.

Lin said several smaller tropical disturbances had already formed within the wider low-pressure zone. They could interfere with one another, restrain each other’s development, dissipate or merge. Around Sept. 4, another low-pressure system located east of the Philippines could begin moving west and add to the unsettled conditions. Lin described the weather during the first week of school as highly unstable.
