Rainibogi’s golden glory

Fiji's national anthem resonated through the arena at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking a historic moment as Taniela Rainibogi secured the nation's first gold medal of the campaign. Rainibogi emerged victorious in the 110kg men's weightlifting competition, outlifting formidable opponents and setting new Commonwealth Games records in both the snatch and clean and jerk disciplines.

Standing atop the podium, Rainibogi expressed that hearing Fiji's anthem made every sacrifice, setback, and challenge throughout his journey worthwhile. This significant achievement on one of sport's biggest stages represents the culmination of years of dedication and perseverance.

The newly crowned champion dedicated his historic gold medal to several individuals, including FASANOC President Cathy Wong, who is currently mourning the loss of her husband. He also extended his dedication to his wife and two children, whose unwavering support has been a constant source of strength through difficult chapters of his career.

Rainibogi also gave thanks to God, crediting his faith as his primary source of strength and motivation heading into his third Commonwealth Games. He finished the competition with a combined lift of 378 kilograms, establishing a new benchmark for the Commonwealth Games record. Following this triumph, coach Henry Elder announced that Rainibogi will take a month-long break before commencing preparations for his next challenge.
