Rakuten Monkeys' New Foreign Batter Wike Promoted to First Team, Will Bat Cleanup

The Rakuten Monkeys are set to feature their new foreign slugger, Wike, in the starting lineup for their three-game series against the Fubon Guardians at the Taipei Dome. Wike will make his debut batting cleanup in left field.

This promotion comes as the team's other foreign player, Dawayne, was moved to the minor league on Thursday. Manager Tseng Hao-chu stated that Dawayne's demotion was not due to injury but rather a struggle to find his rhythm at the plate, leading to increased pressure.

Wike, 34, has prior experience in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, having played for the Yomiuri Giants in 2022. That season, he appeared in 124 games, hitting .271 with 23 home runs and 52 RBIs. He then played for the Oisix Niigata Albirex BC in Japan's independent league this year before being signed by the Rakuten Monkeys.

In his recent minor league game, Wike had a strong performance, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, including his first minor league home run. His debut at the Taipei Dome marks a new chapter for the team as they aim to integrate him into their lineup.
