Rambunctious mayor allegedly triggered police operation in Leipzig

Philipp Preißler, the mayor of Freiberg, is reportedly the subject of a police investigation following an alleged disturbance at a hotel in Leipzig. While officially on vacation, Preißler is accused of damaging hotel property, with parts of the interior found on the street outside his room.

According to police reports, the suspect offered "active resistance" when officers secured him in the hotel room. Two officers sustained minor injuries but were able to continue their duties. Following the incident, Preißler was taken to a hospital for further medical treatment, where a blood test was reportedly conducted. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

The Freiberg city administration confirmed to the press that Preißler was the target of the police operation in Leipzig. A representative for the mayor in Freiberg expressed shock and dismay over the events, stating they lacked further information but hoped for the well-being of all involved.

Preißler, who ran as a candidate for the Free Voters party, was elected mayor of Freiberg in a runoff election in October, securing 46% of the vote. He officially took office on June 24th, following a legal challenge against the election results. Freiberg is a city in Saxony with approximately 41,000 inhabitants.
