RCI report on Tabung Haji to expose institutional wrongdoing, says aide

A report by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) should serve as a pivotal moment for Malaysia to expose mismanagement within the Islamic institution. Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, stated that the RCI report is intended to close a dark chapter in TH's history and begin a new era of transparency, integrity, and focus on the interests of Malaysian Muslims.

He emphasized that Malaysians have the right to know the truth, as every ringgit saved in TH represents the hard work and struggles of ordinary citizens striving to fulfill the fifth pillar of Islam. "Every ringgit saved in this institution is not surplus money. It is the result of tapping rubber, cultivating paddy fields and gardens, driving taxis, running small businesses, and countless other struggles of ordinary people with one big dream: to become guests of Allah," he said.

Therefore, when such a significant trust is handled negligently and betrayed, it is not just the image of an institution that suffers, but the hopes and prayers of millions of Muslims who have saved patiently for years. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has indicated the government's readiness to declassify the report to counter claims regarding the sale of TH's strategic assets in 2018.

Muhammad Kamil further stated that this is not the time to cover up weaknesses, defend past administrations, or protect individuals or groups involved. The Madani government has chosen to reveal the truth, acknowledging that some parties would prefer this dark episode remain forgotten. "But we must be brave enough to admit that mistakes and oversights have occurred. Therefore, our task now is to ensure those responsible are held accountable," he said, expressing hope that the RCI report will mark the end of this dark chapter and the beginning of a more transparent and integrity-driven Tabung Haji.
