Reader reports alarming behavior at Lampedžiai beach

A concerned reader has reported a disturbing incident at a beach in Lampedžiai, Lithuania, where a toddler was repeatedly seen wandering into the water unsupervised. The incident, which occurred on a Friday evening, involved a child around two years old who was observed going into the water alone while the mother sat approximately 50 meters away, engaged in conversation with a friend.

The reader, a Kaunas resident, intervened when the child, who was splashing in the water up to his neck, grabbed another child's ball. The child's father was looking for the toddler's guardians, but they were nowhere in sight. Even after the child returned to his mother, he again ran towards the water alone.

When the reader approached the mother to express concern, she initially reacted defensively, stating she was watching. However, upon hearing that the incident was being recorded and might be reported to child welfare services, the mother approached the child. As she walked past the reader, she remarked, "It's none of your business!" The reader expressed shock at the mother's "unfathomable carelessness," emphasizing the potential danger.

Officials from the Fire and Rescue Department highlight a common misconception: that drowning children will shout for help or splash. In reality, children can drown silently and rapidly. A preschooler who loses balance may not have the strength to lift their head or cry out. A mere 10-20 seconds of distraction, such as looking at a phone or talking, can be fatal. The golden rule for children under six near water is that an adult must remain within arm's reach, ready to grab the child at any moment.
