Rear-end collision near Kraainem viaduct on first day of maintenance works

Maintenance work has commenced on the Kraainem viaduct along the E40 highway, impacting traffic flow between Brussels and Leuven. The Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) is undertaking the project, which involves resurfacing the entire width of the roadway and replacing 12 bridge joints.

These bridge joints are crucial components that allow the road structure to expand or contract due to temperature changes or heavy traffic, preventing asphalt cracking or uplift. Without proper maintenance, these joints can wear out or become blocked.

The works are slated to continue until August 31 and are being carried out in four phases, alternating between the directions towards Brussels and Leuven. While two narrowed lanes will remain open in each direction, moderate traffic disruptions are anticipated, especially during the summer period. Speed limits have been reduced to 50 kilometers per hour within the work zones, down from the usual 90.

On Friday morning, a rear-end collision took place on the E40 near Sterrebeek, close to the construction site. "It is not yet clear what exactly happened. The driver may not have seen the traffic jam," said Carla Cox of AWV. Two lanes were temporarily blocked but have since been cleared.
