Record 2.7 Tons of Cocaine Discovered in Australia

Australian authorities have seized a record-breaking 2.7 tons of cocaine, discovered hidden within shipping containers in a Sydney suburb. This massive haul represents the largest cocaine seizure ever made in the country, with police stating the drugs would have fetched approximately $816 million Australian dollars on the black market.

The discovery was made in clandestine underground bunkers on a property in Londonderry, a western Sydney suburb. The cocaine was concealed within plastic containers concealed beneath false floors in the shipping containers. The operation followed extensive investigations into an international drug trafficking network. Alongside this seizure, authorities also confiscated 178 kilograms of cocaine and 142 kilograms of methamphetamine in previous operations, bringing the total amount of drugs removed from circulation to over three tons.

Two men, aged 21 and 25, were apprehended attempting to flee the scene. They face charges of possession of a commercial quantity of illegally imported drugs, with potential life imprisonment if convicted. This arrest is part of a broader investigation that has already seen six other suspects detained since the inquiry began in May. Police suspect the drugs were transported to Sydney on behalf of an organized criminal group.

Authorities believe the illicit cargo initially arrived off the coast of Queensland before being transported to Sydney. Investigations are ongoing to identify the full scope of the network and the origin of the drugs. Australia's high cocaine prices make it a particularly lucrative market for international drug smugglers, fueling such large-scale trafficking operations.
