Record Number of Youth Choose Military Path in Lithuania

The General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy is welcoming a record number of new cadets this year, with 170 young individuals choosing to embark on a military career. This surge in interest represents a significant increase from previous years, with only 143 cadets admitted last year and 98 in 2024. The Ministry of National Defence highlighted this achievement, noting that the admission quota was raised from 150 to 170 places to accommodate the high number of aspiring cadets.

Nearly five hundred young people registered for motivational interviews, and approximately 280 were selected for further evaluation. Some candidates were disqualified due to health requirements. The Minister of National Defence, Robert Kaunas, expressed pride in the younger generation's readiness to serve the nation, stating, "Given the record number of young people willing to serve the motherland, we have increased the first-year intake quota from 150 to 170 places. I am proud of the young generation, which is ready not only to talk about national security but also to personally take responsibility."

This year, the defense studies program also ranked among the top ten most popular state-funded programs for the first time. Colonel Ričardas Dumbliauskas, head of the Lithuanian Military Academy, described these results as a crucial signal for both the academy and the entire national defense system. He stated, "We have reason to be proud of this result. It indicates the growing prestige of the officer profession and the increasing determination of young people to link their future with service to the Lithuanian state. This is also an acknowledgment of all the academy's lecturers, instructors, soldiers, and staff who work with cadets daily and contribute to the education of future leaders of the Lithuanian Armed Forces."

The Lithuanian Military Academy serves as the primary institution for training officers in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Cadets there study, train, and learn leadership, decision-making, teamwork, and responsibility for others. The academy aims to prepare future military leaders capable of operating effectively in complex contemporary and future security environments.
