Record temperature in Croatia: Thermometers show 40 degrees Celsius

Croatia is currently enduring a significant heatwave, with temperatures soaring to a summer high of 40 degrees Celsius on August 6. This marks the first time this summer that the mercury has reached such a level.

The peak temperature was recorded at 5 p.m. by the meteorological station at Osijek Airport, according to the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ). Nearby locations like Gradište and Osijek-Čepin registered temperatures two degrees lower, while Slavonski Brod was only slightly cooler.

In the capital, Zagreb, the Maksimir meteorological station reported a temperature of 36.7 degrees Celsius. The coolest spot recorded during the day was Prevlaka, with a temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius.

The country had been under a high alert for extreme heat from August 5 to 6. However, a cooling trend is expected to begin on August 7. While the temperature drop is not predicted to be drastic, the DHMZ forecasts minimum air temperatures ranging from 18 to 23 degrees Celsius nationwide, and 23 to 28 degrees Celsius along the Adriatic coast. Daytime maximums are expected to range from 34 to 37 degrees Celsius along the coast and in the eastern parts of the country.
