Red alert for Valdivia and Futrono as rivers overflow due to storm system

Red alerts are in effect for the communes of Valdivia and Futrono in Chile's Los Ríos region as rivers Coique and Santo Domingo have overflowed their banks. The severe weather system impacting the area has led to significant flooding.

Vicky Carrasco, the presidential delegate, reported that 10 homes have sustained minor damage across the region. An additional 33 homes are currently being assessed for the extent of the damage. Officials from the regional secretariat of Social Development are on-site, conducting FIBE assessments to determine the level of impact on affected families. The majority of the damage is concentrated in Valdivia, where approximately 33 homes are inundated.

Adding to the challenges, a landslide occurred on Monday afternoon, cutting off the main access route to Futrono. This blockage is hindering emergency response and access for residents and aid workers. Authorities are working to manage the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the extreme weather.
