Red, Orange, and Yellow Alerts Issued for Cold, Storms, and Zonda Winds on August 1

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a series of red and yellow alerts for extreme cold and storms affecting various provinces on Saturday, August 1. This follows several unstable days, a slight temperature increase, and a rainy end to the week.

A red alert for extreme cold is in effect for the western part of Santa Cruz province, warning of "very dangerous" conditions with "high to extreme health effects." These low temperatures could impact even those not considered at-risk groups. A milder yellow alert for rain is also active in the same area. In Tierra del Fuego, a yellow alert is in place for cold conditions.

The SMN recommends avoiding prolonged exposure to low temperatures, wearing multiple layers of light clothing if going outside, and maintaining safe heating indoors. Staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol, and paying special attention to vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are also advised.

Furthermore, an orange alert for storms has been issued for Corrientes, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and western Córdoba. These areas are expected to experience isolated strong storms, some severe, with intense rainfall over short periods, hail of various sizes, gusts potentially exceeding 100 km/h, and frequent electrical activity. Accumulated precipitation is estimated between 60 and 100 millimeters, possibly exceeding these amounts in some locations.

A yellow alert for storms covers the southeastern strip of Buenos Aires province, Corrientes, Chaco, and northern Córdoba. These districts may face rains of varying intensity, some strong or locally severe, accompanied by strong gusts, hail, abundant rainfall in short periods, and intense electrical activity. Accumulated precipitation is expected to be between 30 and 50 millimeters, with possible localized excesses. Additionally, a yellow alert for winds is active in Jujuy, western Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, San Juan, Mendoza, Neuquén, and Río Negro, with winds from the north ranging from 30 to 50 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h. Zonda winds are also predicted for Jujuy.
