Regent Group Chairman Detained by Police in Dhaka Following Public Apprehension

Mohammad Shahed Karim, the chairman of Regent Group, was taken into police custody in Dhaka after an incident where he was detained by a group of individuals in the ECB Chattar area. The situation unfolded around noon, prompting police intervention.

Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Cantonment Police Station, confirmed Karim's detention. "A group of people had detained him. Police went to the scene after receiving information about the incident and took him into custody," Hasan stated. He added that Karim is already implicated in a case with the Pallabi Police Station, and police will formally arrest him in that case if requested.

This latest development follows Karim's release from Dhaka Central Jail in September 2024, where he had been held on bail for 96 previous cases. His initial arrest by the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in July 2020, while allegedly attempting to flee to India disguised in a burqa, brought to light numerous allegations of fraud and financial misconduct.

The most prominent accusations centered on Regent Hospital, operated by Regent Group. The hospital faced severe allegations of issuing thousands of fake Covid-19 test certificates and charging patients for services and treatments in direct violation of its agreement with the government. The case highlighted significant irregularities in the healthcare sector during the pandemic.
