Report: Extradition request filed for ex-Justice Minister Ziobro from US

An extradition request for former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro has reportedly been initiated from the United States, according to Polish media. Ziobro, who also served as the Prosecutor General, faces charges in an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities within the Justice Fund.

Previously, Ziobro had sought and obtained international protection in Hungary from the government of Viktor Orbán. However, reports indicate that Hungary revoked Ziobro's refugee status, along with that of his wife Patrycja Kotecka-Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski, a former deputy minister also implicated in the investigation, in early July. Their travel documents were also reportedly invalidated.

Ziobro had been staying in Hungary after a court in Warsaw approved his arrest warrant and an international wanted notice was issued. He stated in May that he had not fled Poland and was using a document granted with asylum rights in Hungary. Despite an earlier European Arrest Warrant request being denied by a Warsaw district court in July, the current Minister of Justice, Waldemar Żurek, had previously announced intentions to file an extradition request.
