Rescue team struggles to reach workers trapped in Chilime tunnel due to mud

A search and rescue operation at the Chilime Hydropower Project in Rasuwa faces significant challenges as a rescue team has been unable to reach individuals trapped inside a tunnel. Heavy deposits of mud and sludge are completely blocking access.

The team, composed of expert mountain guides from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) and the Simrik Helicopter team, inspected the tunnel on Saturday. They reported that the tunnel is entirely filled with deep muddy sediment, making entry extremely difficult. Despite using rope protection and maintaining contact, rescuers could only advance approximately 120 to 130 meters before the mud, reaching up to their chests, prevented further progress toward the blocked section.

To overcome this obstacle, the team's next plan involves using hose pipes and a pump system to expedite the removal of the accumulated mud and sludge. Rescuers believe that clearing the blockage could create a possibility of reaching those trapped inside. During the operation, the team also recovered the body of one person found outside the tunnel, which was then handed over to the Nepal Army for transport.

The rescue team stated it remains on standby and will mobilize again if requested by the Government of Nepal. The operation was led by mountain guide Ashish Gurung, with team members including Jenjen Lama, Dorji Sherpa, Sabin Thakuri, Tulising Gurung, and Pasang Tendi Sherpa.
