Rescued dog, adopted days before earthquake, becomes symbol of hope in Colombia

The image of Kiara, a two-year-old mixed-breed dog, trapped on the fifth floor of a partially collapsed building in Dosquebradas, Colombia, has resonated globally. Kiara had been adopted only four days before the magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck central and western Colombia, turning her into a poignant symbol of the disaster's impact on families and their companion animals.

A viral video captured Kiara's distress and immobility, highlighting the danger she faced if she moved. The rescue operation was a complex and lengthy endeavor, with firefighters from Dosquebradas dedicating over 24 hours to carefully extract her using ropes and specialized climbing gear. The operation involved a team working from heights while another provided structural assessments from the outside.

Councilman Héctor Hernández Tubón of Pereira recounted how the case came to light through social media monitoring. Upon arriving at the scene, he described the heartbreaking sight of the animal on the fifth or sixth floor of the damaged facade. The successful extraction of Kiara, described as having a "very happy ending amidst this sadness," brought much-needed emotional relief to the rescue teams and the community.

Kiara was not the only animal rescued from the building; another dog was also saved during the same operation. Both were reunited with their families in what Hernández called a "very emotional" moment that provided energy to continue in the difficult and emotionally draining situation. While these rescues offered glimmers of hope, the earthquake's aftermath has been harsh for many animals, with some perishing after falling from heights and others still missing beneath the rubble. Authorities are awaiting specialized animal rescue teams due to the building's instability.
