Restored portrait found with soldier's remains in Vietnam sparks hope for identification

A restored portrait of a woman, discovered alongside the remains of an unidentified soldier at the Nghia Lam Martyrs' Cemetery in Quang Ngai, Vietnam, has ignited hope for identifying the fallen soldier. The discovery was made during an excavation to collect biological samples from grave number 42.

Inside an old wallet found near the remains, officials discovered the faded portrait and other personal items. The Provincial Military Command of Quang Ngai has since restored the image, enabling them to collaborate with specialized agencies and local authorities to cross-reference records and ascertain the soldier's identity. Nghia Lam Cemetery currently holds 222 graves, with 197 having been excavated as part of an ongoing campaign to identify martyrs.

This initiative, part of a larger "500 days and nights searching, collecting, and identifying martyrs' remains" campaign in Quang Ngai, is about one-third complete. Forces are working diligently to expedite sample collection and information gathering to meet the project's deadline.

Authorities have received inquiries from potential relatives regarding the restored photographs. Colonel Trinh Cong Son, Deputy Political Commissar of the Quang Ngai Provincial Military Command, stated that they have contacted the family of Kieu Thi Minh Hue from Lam Dong province. While Hue's mother believes the individuals in the photos strongly resemble her late parents, she noted discrepancies in their attire compared to traditional clothing. Additionally, a family from a northern province has also reached out with relevant information. The Provincial Military Command is currently verifying these leads.

Through the conversation, Mrs. Hue's mother recognized the two people in the photo as strongly resembling her husband and wife, but there were some differences in clothing. According to the family, Mrs. Hue's parents did not wear the type of clothing shown in the photo before.
