Retail drug trafficking rivalry investigated in attack on Hermosillo’s “Noche Suprema”; prosecutors rule out extortion

Authorities in Sonora are focusing on a rivalry between two retail drug-trafficking groups after an armed attack and fire damaged the ring prepared for the “Noche Suprema” event in Hermosillo.

The attack took place on the night of Aug. 28, one day before the show featuring influencers and professional boxers. The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office said the investigation remains open and involves the Public Prosecutor’s Office, investigative police and forensic services.

Twenty-four people have given statements, including witnesses, influencers, promoters, boxers and technical staff responsible for lighting, audio and video. Authorities have also received complaints from public officials and private parties affected by the damage.

The investigation says some event participants had publicly promoted activities associated with drug use. Prosecutors rejected claims that the incident involved “cobro de piso,” an extortion scheme in which criminals demand payments for protection. They also said there was no indication that the physical safety of people expected to attend the event the following day had been at risk.

No one was injured. The venue suffered partial damage, and officials said it would be cleaned and repaired so it could return to use. The event organizers will assume any legal responsibilities related to the damage. Although they had obtained civil protection permits from Hermosillo, authorities said the organizers lacked a physical security plan for attendees and participants. The promoter should have submitted that plan for review by the state security committee.
