Retired teacher, wife, daughter, son found murdered in Rangpur home

A family of four, including a retired schoolteacher, his wife, daughter, and son, were found murdered in their locked home in the Daspara-Machhuapara area of Rangpur city, Bangladesh. The bodies were discovered late last night and were cremated on Sunday evening after autopsies at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Authorities recovered the bodies around 11:00 pm. The victims have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; their daughter, Agami Chakraborty, 23; and son, Priyom Chakraborty, 12. The family had resided in the house for the past four years. Ganapati Chakraborty had retired as a Hindu religious studies teacher from Rangpur Zilla School on December 31 of the previous year. His daughter had recently completed her master's degree, and his son was a fifth-grade student.

When we received the bodies in the evening, we found that their faces had been burned. Earlier, police did not allow us to go near the bodies. This was a planned murder.

CID Rangpur's acting superintendent, Sumit Chowdhury, stated that investigators believe a flammable substance was poured on the victims' faces, either before or after the killings. Samples will be collected for forensic examination to determine the exact substance used. The younger sister of Pritilata Chakraborty alleged that the family's faces were burned when they received the bodies, adding that police had initially restricted access. She described the murders as "planned."

Police arrested two young men, Siddhartho Das, 19, and Mugdho Das, 21, from the same locality early today in connection with the incident. Both arrestees are reportedly drug users; Siddhartho runs a fish business, and Mugdho works as a goldsmith. Ganapati's elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case at Kotwali Police Station, and information regarding a Tk 15 lakh withdrawal by Ganapati for house construction is being investigated.
