Returned from vacation to find stranger living in her apartment, police initially unwilling to arrest

A New York woman returned from vacation to find an unknown woman had entered her apartment and made herself at home on the couch. Yelim Kim, a videographer and photographer, shared unsettling surveillance footage from her Ring camera showing the stranger casually walking into her apartment, exploring it, and then settling on the couch with her shoes on.

The intruder, who claimed to be a "patient," was eventually confronted by a friend of Kim's who managed to enter the apartment. The unknown woman then left the premises. Kim posted the video on her Instagram, expressing disbelief that her "luxury" New York building allegedly gave spare keys to a stranger while she was out of town.

The incident occurred in the Halo LIC residential building, and the property management company has been accused of negligence. The footage, accompanied by dramatic music, captured the intruder noticing the camera and disabling it. Kim also shared screenshots of real-time messages showing residents tracking the intrusion and contacting the police.

Reactions in the comments were strong, with many expressing shock and anger at the intruder's audacity and the building management's response. Other residents confirmed ongoing issues with management, with one stating, "Management just hides behind a legal email and has not addressed tenant concerns yet." Police from the 108th precinct initially hesitated to file a report, suggesting it was a "civil dispute." However, after the video gained significant public and media attention, an official investigation was launched. Kim confirmed she would be appearing on Fox 5 New York to discuss the incident.
