Reykjavík health department opposes data centers near prison due to noise

Reykjavík's environmental health department (HER) has voiced opposition to the proposed location of data centers on Hólmsheiði, citing significant noise pollution concerns for the nearby prison.

The department's assessment, submitted to the city's planning and building authorities, highlights that the constant, round-the-clock noise generated by data centers is undesirable. HER argues that while the noise may not exceed legal limits, its continuous nature could negatively affect the experience of people using nearby outdoor recreational areas.

There is noise that will be constant and will last around the clock all year round. Although the noise does not exceed the limits, constant hum/noise will affect the experience of people who engage in outdoor activities in the vicinity.

Furthermore, the department points out that prolonged exposure to such persistent noise can lead to adverse health effects, including elevated blood pressure and impacts on cardiovascular health. The assessment also questions the placement of data centers reliant on oil-powered backup generators within a designated water protection zone, deeming it inappropriate.

HER is calling for more thorough acoustic analyses to accurately assess the potential impact of the data centers on the surrounding environment and its inhabitants.
