RGD and His Son Begin Their Fourth Year in Prison as Defense Splits Over “Dark Maneuvers”

Two defense lawyers have walked away from the cases of Ramón González Daher and his son, accusing fellow attorneys of “dark and dangerous maneuvers” that could directly harm the imprisoned men’s interests. Raquel Talavera and Erich Ratzlaff submitted their resignations on August 24, just before the pair reached four years in prison.

González Daher is serving a 15-year sentence, while Fernando González Karjallo is serving five years. The convictions involved aggravated usury and other offenses. The resigning lawyers said they no longer shared the procedural strategies adopted by María Gloria Núñez and Carolina González, who had joined the defense. Carolina González is also Fernando González Karjallo’s wife.

In their resignation filings, Talavera and Ratzlaff said the other lawyers’ actions constituted “dark and dangerous maneuvers” that they neither shared nor endorsed. They also argued that family and other ties between the two attorneys and the González Daher family compromised the defense’s objectivity, independence and unified technical direction.

The dispute comes as numerous delaying appeals continue to hold up proceedings to confiscate assets and compensate victims of excessive loans. A separate case against Fernando González Karjallo, his mother Delcia Karjallo and his wife over alleged money laundering linked to usury also remains delayed. The indictment was filed on July 3, 2024, but the preliminary hearing has not been completed.
