Richard Carapaz holds sixth place in Vuelta a España after Stage 5

Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz maintained his sixth position in the general classification of the Vuelta a España after completing Stage 5 on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Carapaz crossed the finish line in 55th place, arriving with the same time as the stage winner, Matthew Brennan.

Brennan, riding for Visma, secured his second victory of the current edition by dominating the final sprint in Roquetes. The stage, covering 173.3 kilometers from Falset, was largely uneventful for the overall classification contenders. Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates successfully defended his red jersey, holding a lead of 3 minutes and 21 seconds over Primoz Roglic and 3 minutes and 32 seconds over Enric Mas.

Carapaz, representing EF Education EasyPost, is now three minutes and 50 seconds behind Pogacar in the overall standings, accumulating a total time of 11:29:51 hours. His strongest performance so far was in Stage 4, where he climbed from 25th to sixth place. Beyond the general classification, Carapaz is also contending for the mountains classification, where he currently sits in fifth place with six points, trailing leader Tadej Pogacar who has 23 points.

The race is set to become more challenging with Stage 6 on Thursday, August 27, 2026. This 177.5-kilometer stage from Alcossebre to Castellón is classified as medium mountain. It features four climbs, including the first-category Puerto El Bartolo, and second-category ascents at La Serratella and Alto del Desierto de las Palmas, along with a third-category climb at Coll de la Banderete.
