Romeu Zema, the former governor of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, has officially launched his presidential campaign, positioning himself as a right-wing alternative and criticizing the current administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Zema's candidacy enters a political landscape where the right is fragmented, particularly following the legal troubles of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Zema is running under the banner of the Novo Party and faces competition from other right-wing contenders, including Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro's eldest son, and Ronaldo Caiado, the former governor of Goiás. Despite his criticisms of Lula's Workers' Party (PT), which he accused of "destroying Brazil," Zema faces an uphill battle in the polls. Current surveys indicate he holds only about 3% of voter support, trailing significantly behind both Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva.

During a press conference, Zema articulated his platform, emphasizing security as a key issue. He pledged to designate Brazilian drug trafficking gangs as "terrorist organizations," a policy similar to that implemented by the Trump administration in the United States. He also proposed building a new maximum-security prison in the Amazon region, citing the expansion of drug trafficking there. Zema aims to restore what he perceives as Brazil's lost sovereignty, arguing that the country should have long ago taken stronger measures against criminal organizations.
