Spain's King Felipe VI arrives in Peru for Keiko Fujimori's presidential inauguration

King Felipe VI of Spain arrived in Lima on Monday to attend the inauguration of Peru's president-elect, Keiko Fujimori. The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, which is Peru's national day.

Upon arrival, the Spanish monarch was received by Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Pareja, and Spain's Ambassador to Peru, Alejandro Abellán García de Diego, in a brief protocol ceremony. No statements were made during the reception.

During his stay, King Felipe VI is scheduled to meet with both the outgoing interim president, José María Balcázar, and the president-elect, Keiko Fujimori. This visit will be the King's second attendance at a presidential inauguration in Peru since his own proclamation, having previously attended the ceremony for Pedro Castillo five years ago.

King Felipe VI has attended 23 inaugurations since becoming king. He is also expected to attend the inauguration of Colombia's new president, Abelardo De la Espriella, in August. The arrival of other regional leaders, including the presidents of Uruguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Panama, Honduras, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic, was also anticipated for Monday.

Keiko Fujimori's election victory came by a narrow margin of less than 50,000 votes. Her return to government, under the "fujimorismo" banner, occurs nearly 26 years after her father, Alberto Fujimori, resigned amid a massive corruption scandal and was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity.
