Road paving to Brjánslækur port postponed amid budget concerns

The planned paving of the road leading to the port at Brjánslækur has been postponed until next year. The decision came after the bids submitted for the joint tender by Vesturbyggð municipality and the Road Administration significantly exceeded the latter's cost estimate. This postponement is a disappointment for local officials, particularly Gerður Björk Sveinsdóttir, the mayor of Vesturbyggð.

Sveinsdóttir expressed her disappointment, noting that the work was intended to improve the access road to the port. She highlighted the timing of the project, suggesting it was appropriate given the disruptions faced this summer. These disruptions included the ferry Baldur, which normally sails between Stykkishólmur and Brjánslækur with a stop in Flatey, being rerouted.

This summer, the ferry Herjólfur, serving the Vestmannaeyjar route, operated at reduced capacity due to a malfunction. Consequently, the Baldur was redeployed to sail between Vestmannaeyjar and Landeyjahöfn. While the ferry Særún operated between Stykkishólmur and Flatey, no ferry provided a direct service all the way to Brjánslækur. The Baldur has since returned to its regular route in Breiðafjörður, but the earlier service disruptions underscored the importance of reliable infrastructure for the region.
