Roberto Gómez Fernández Announces "El Chapulín Colorado" Film, Will Tell Origin Story

Roberto Gómez Fernández, son of the legendary Mexican comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, has confirmed that a live-action film focusing on the origin of the beloved character "El Chapulín Colorado" is in the works. This project marks a return to live-action for the iconic hero, stepping away from the animated iterations seen in recent years.

Fernández shared the news on the red carpet at the CANACINE Awards, stating, "We are working on it and it will soon be ready to go into production." He emphasized that the film would delve into the hero's beginnings, noting, "I can't say much, but it's the origin (of the hero), I don't think it will be animation, and (the actor) will be someone deserving of that role." The idea for exploring "El Chapulín Colorado's" backstory has been a long-standing one, with Gómez Bolaños himself having discussed it with his son over a decade ago, but it was postponed due to the meticulous care required.

While two animated series featuring the character have been produced, including the recent "Los Colorado," which depicts him as a family man battling old foes, the focus for the new film is on a live-action approach. Fernández indicated that casting is not yet a priority, preferring to finalize the project details first. He also touched upon the responsibility of preserving his father's work, mentioning other potential projects in development, such as a series about "Don Ramón" and an animated "Chavo del 8."

Fernández was attending the CANACINE Awards, where he received the award for Most-Watched Series in Mexico for "Chespirito: sin querer queriendo." This recognition adds to the accolades for projects honoring his father's legacy, highlighting the enduring popularity and cultural significance of these characters in Mexico and beyond.
