Roberto Mancini set for second spell as Italy head coach, sources say

Roberto Mancini is reportedly poised for a second tenure as the head coach of the Italian national football team, according to a source close to the matter. Mancini previously managed the squad from 2018 to 2023, a period highlighted by their victory in the 2021 European Championship.

His anticipated return comes at a critical juncture for Italian football, as the national team has struggled to qualify for the FIFA World Cup since 2014. Mancini is expected to replace Gennaro Gattuso, who departed in April after a World Cup qualifying loss. This marks the third consecutive World Cup absence for the four-time champions.

Italian media reported that the Football Federation (FIGC) President, Giovanni Malago, announced the appointment during a Federal Council meeting, stating, "Mancini is the coach." The 61-year-old manager brings a wealth of experience, having also managed prominent clubs like Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and Manchester City, where he secured their first Premier League title in the 2011-12 season.

The FIGC faced challenges in finding a replacement, with their primary candidate, Andrea Pirlo, being blocked due to ties to a Russian betting firm. Additionally, former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola turned down the job earlier this month. Former FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and adviser Leonardo resigned following the issues with Pirlo's potential appointment.
