Romania Activates Emergency Plans Amid Extreme Heatwave Alert

Romania's Ministry of Health has issued an urgent call to all medical system structures to activate intervention plans to mitigate risks associated with extreme temperatures. This directive follows a Code Red alert for extreme heat issued by meteorologists for Sunday and Monday, affecting 16 counties. The remaining parts of the country are under yellow and orange alerts, indicating that approximately three-quarters of Romania will experience the heatwave. The ministry specifically requested that ambulance services alert and supplement their crews where call volumes are increasing. Public health directorates are tasked with verifying the availability of medical assistance in healthcare facilities, ensuring adequate stocks of emergency medications, particularly those for heat-related pathologies, and managing human resources. The ministry issued a firm message to the public, advising citizens to "Listen to doctors' advice and avoid prolonged sun exposure, dehydration, and outdoor activities that require high energy consumption." These warnings come as thermometers are expected to climb as high as 41 degrees Celsius in the shade, with perceived temperatures potentially exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in some regions. The risks range from heatstroke to the aggravation of chronic illnesses, significantly increasing the burden on the healthcare system.
