Romania downs second drone in national airspace within two days

Romania's air force successfully intercepted and destroyed a second drone within its national airspace in as many days, signaling a heightened response to aerial intrusions. An F-16 fighter jet downed the aircraft on Saturday morning in an uninhabited area near the border with Ukraine, according to the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

The downed drone was identified as being of Russian design. This incident follows the destruction of a similar drone on Friday, which also occurred in an uninhabited area. The Romanian President stated that investigation teams were examining the details of the Friday incident.

These events are significant as Romania, a NATO member, has experienced multiple drone violations of its airspace during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While drones had previously crashed or entered Romanian territory, this is the first instance of the military actively shooting one down. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that the drone was downed over an uninhabited area, approximately 110 kilometers northeast of the capital, Bucharest.

The Romanian Foreign Minister described the successful interception as a "success," attributing it to effective cooperation with other NATO forces. The country's parliament had previously passed legislation explicitly authorizing the military to shoot down unmanned drones following an incident in late May where a drone crashed into a residential building near Galati, injuring two people.
