Romania has fuel reserves for at least four months, ex-minister says; rationing not needed yet

Former Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan asserted on Thursday that Romania possesses sufficient fuel reserves to last at least four months in the event of a complete halt to imports. Speaking at "Adevărul Interviews," Ivan indicated that talk of rationing fuel consumption is premature.

"I wouldn't use the term rationing, at least not for now, because we managed, compared to other EU states, in that situation for the globe, we managed an energy segment management, very complicated, with all market operators. there are also operators who have very large losses," Ivan stated.

He also anticipates an extraordinary parliamentary session, primarily to adopt legislative packages required by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (PNRR) before the August 31 deadline. "I think there will be an extraordinary session because by August 31, several legislative packages from the PNRR must be approved. If you don't have a government with full powers, you won't be able to adopt those normative acts," he explained.

Ivan emphasized that Romania's energy system remains well-balanced. However, he warned of risks when baseload energy, or constant production when needed, cannot be guaranteed. "For this reason, I strongly supported that we still need the Oltenia Energy Complex, coal-based energy, which, when there is a market imbalance, you can press the button to start producing electricity," he added.
