Romania Seeks Permanent U.S. Military Presence, Discusses Security with Congressional Delegation

Romania is actively pursuing a strengthened and permanent U.S. military presence on its territory, signaling its commitment to regional security and its role within NATO.

State Secretary Sorin Moldovan articulated this objective during a meeting with a delegation from the U.S. Congress, led by Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. The discussions, held at the Ministry of National Defense, focused on evolving security dynamics in the region, the strategic significance of the Black Sea, and the deepening of the Romania-U.S. Strategic Partnership.

Moldovan emphasized the critical importance of the United States' commitment to the security of NATO's Eastern Flank and the Black Sea region. He stated, "Romania remains a reliable ally of the United States and an active contributor to the security of NATO's Eastern Flank. We seek further consolidation of the American military posture in Romania, including through a permanent presence, which would represent an important element for deterrence, defense, and stability in the Black Sea region."

Romania has responded to a request from the U.S. Department of Defense regarding a review of the American military posture in Europe, reaffirming its stance on maintaining and enhancing U.S. presence in the region. The talks also explored avenues for expanding cooperation in military training, capability development, and education, aiming to boost interoperability and joint preparation between the armed forces of both nations.

Furthermore, officials discussed the interconnectedness of security, stability, and industrial cooperation. The importance of deepening economic ties and increasing American investments in Romania was highlighted as a component of the strategic partnership. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued political and military dialogue and to advancing Romanian-American cooperation on shared strategic interests.
