Romania is facing a rapid and dramatic shift in weather patterns, transitioning abruptly from a period of extreme drought to a significant threat of flash floods and local inundations. This sudden change has prompted meteorologists to issue urgent warnings across several regions.

A yellow code alert for flash floods has been activated for rivers in 19 counties, effective until Wednesday midnight, with further extensions anticipated. This alert signifies a heightened risk of overflowing rivers and potential flooding in affected areas. The rapid onset of these conditions follows an extended dry spell that has left the land parched.

Meteorologists explain that the prolonged drought has rendered the soil extremely dry, severely limiting its capacity to absorb the sudden influx of heavy rainfall. "Dry soil cannot absorb water," noted a meteorologist, highlighting the critical factor exacerbating the flood risk. This inability of the ground to soak up precipitation means that water will run off more rapidly, increasing the volume and speed of river flows and consequently raising the danger of flooding.
