Romania Women's Volleyball Team Ends European Championship with Victory Over Spain

The Romanian women's volleyball team achieved their sole victory of the 2026 European Championship by defeating Spain 3-0 in their final Group C match in Baku. The win, with set scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-20, allowed the Romanian team to avoid finishing last in their group.

Both teams had already been eliminated from contention before this match. Rodica Buterez and Ioana Maria Baciu led the Romanian offense, with each player contributing 15 points. Buterez also excelled in reception and blocking. For the Spanish team, Julia Da Paula Viana and Lucia Varela Gomez each scored 11 points, while Ana Escamilla added 10.

The match lasted one hour and 26 minutes. In the final standings for Group C, Romania placed fifth with 6 points, finishing above Spain (1 point). Belgium topped the group with 13 points, followed by the Netherlands (12 points), and Azerbaijan (9 points), with Portugal in fourth place (5 points).

The European Championship, held from August 21 to September 6, features matches across Turkey, the Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, and Sweden. The knockout stages, including the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, are primarily being held in Istanbul.
