Romanian Mayor Fritz Faces Mandate Loss Amid Accusations of Political Plot

Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz, a prominent figure in the USR party, is at risk of losing his mandate following a legislative maneuver he claims is a politically motivated attack.

Fritz alleges that the PSD and AUR parties have "joined hands" to remove him from his position. He points to a specific amendment adopted in the Senate's legal committee as the instrument of this alleged plot. The USR leader described the amendment as "extremely serious and unconstitutional."

According to Fritz, the modification, introduced by "PSD hand-in-hand with AUR," directly targets him. He further contends that this move not only endangers his political future but also puts Romania's access to crucial funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) at risk. Fritz indicated that a challenge to the constitutionality of the amendment would be filed with the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR).
