Romanian Opposition Warns of 1 Billion Euro EU Fund Loss, Cites Government Mismanagement

Sorin Grindeanu, the president of Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD), has voiced strong criticism of the current government's approach to national leadership, warning that the country is heading for disaster. He specifically highlighted concerns regarding the potential loss of 1 billion euros in funds allocated through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Grindeanu stated that the PSD has initiated legal challenges against 12 government decisions, with further legal actions planned to ensure parliamentary control over legislative processes. "Tomorrow we will file the action in contentious administrative court," Grindeanu announced, emphasizing the party's commitment to contesting government decrees.He further asserted that Parliament should expedite legislative projects that the Government is attempting to advance through other means. Grindeanu mentioned receiving numerous proposals from executive members, indicating a desire to pass these laws through parliamentary channels. He also issued a stark warning about the government's biodiversity strategy, suggesting it could lead to legal issues jeopardizing European funding. "It is not too late to withdraw it, because otherwise the government may be accused of having lost one billion euros," the PSD leader declared, urging the government to reconsider its approach.Grindeanu also touched upon the healthcare situation, revealing that he has spoken with numerous healthcare workers who fear losing income. He shared a personal experience, noting his father's prolonged hospitalization, during which he interacted with medical staff expressing concerns about significant income reductions. "A doctor: 'I am losing 5,800, 6,000.' Nurses and assistants somewhere around 1,500," he reported.Expressing "extreme concern" over the economic and social climate, Grindeanu stressed the urgent need for a change in the country's leadership style. He believes the solution lies in establishing a government with full powers as quickly as possible to prevent further crises. "We must change the style of running the country. We are heading for the ditch. The solution is to have a government as soon as possible. And I believe we will have this government that Romania needs, so that we don't go through what we are seeing now," he concluded.
