Romanian Senator: Meeting with Presidential Advisor Not Secret Negotiations

Senator Petrișor Peiu of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party affirmed that the party's campaign to impeach Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan will continue. This stance remains firm despite a recent photograph circulating that shows AUR leader George Simion at the same table as presidential advisor Marius Lazurca.

Peiu addressed the photograph, stating that a meeting between Simion, in his capacity as party leader, and Lazurca does not constitute "hidden negotiations." He drew a parallel to his own interactions, noting that his own numerous meetings do not imply secret dealings for government formation. The senator emphasized that the party's focus on Dan's removal is driven by what they perceive as the mayor's defiant management style.

If Simion goes as party leader and meets with someone, it doesn't mean he's conducting hidden negotiations. I also meet with many people, that doesn't mean we are negotiating the formation of a government.

The photograph in question, which also included former presidential advisor Iulian Chifu, Senator Mircia Chelaru, and Professor Silviu Rogobete, was taken on August 15th. The Presidential Administration confirmed the photo was captured at a reception in Constanța following the official ceremony for Romanian Navy Day, an event attended by hundreds of guests.

Earlier this month, AUR launched a dedicated online platform, suspeND.ro, to support their impeachment initiative. The website is designed to provide transparency on the parliamentary procedure, display the number of signatures required, track each parliamentarian's stance, and allow citizens to express their support for the ongoing effort to suspend Mayor Nicușor Dan.

We are moving forward with the suspension, with the signature collection process, nothing has changed. In our opinion, the way Nicușor Dan operates is a defiance. There will be a very precise public communication. Parties that are dissatisfied with how ND has managed should come and support the initiative.
