Romanian Integrity Law Published, Mayor Fritz Faces Mandate Loss in 30 Days

A new integrity law in Romania, designed to strengthen transparency and combat corruption, has been officially published, setting in motion a process that could see Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz lose his office. The law, which has been the subject of significant political contention and constitutional challenges, was promulgated by President Nicușor Dan.

Under the new legislation, individuals found to be definitively incompatible or in conflict of interest will forfeit their public office, dignity, or mandate within 30 days of the law taking effect, provided the legal prohibition remains applicable. This provision aims to ensure accountability for public officials.

Mayor Fritz has vehemently criticized the law's promulgation, labeling it an "abuse" and "political revenge." He asserts that the measure effectively nullifies the votes of the 52,000 citizens who elected him and that the new sanctions are based on situations for which he has already been penalized. Fritz has also directed criticism towards the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Integrity Agency (ANI), and the Constitutional Court, alleging political motivations behind the law's application against him.

Fritz has announced his intention to contest the measure and has indicated that if he loses his mandate, further actions will be taken. The law's entry into force, typically three days after publication in the Official Gazette, means the 30-day countdown for Mayor Fritz's potential removal has begun.
