Romanian woman banned from Wizz Air for a year after smoking e-cigarette on flight

A Romanian woman has been banned from flying with Wizz Air for one year after smoking an e-cigarette in an airplane restroom. The incident occurred on a flight from Rome to Bucharest on May 30, shortly after the woman learned of her mother's sudden death.

Overwhelmed by grief, the 49-year-old freelancer reportedly went to the lavatory and lit an e-cigarette. She was discovered by the cabin crew and subsequently sanctioned. While she apologized and claimed ignorance of the rules regarding e-cigarettes, the airline has a strict policy against their use, treating them the same as traditional cigarettes.

The woman has hired a team of Romanian lawyers to contest the ban. Her legal representatives acknowledge Wizz Air's rules but argue that her profound emotional distress following her mother's death warrants consideration under the "necessity" defense. They believe the circumstances of her loss should mitigate the penalty.
