Root returns as England Test captain, citing 'very different place'

Joe Root is embracing a second tenure as England's Test captain, declaring he is in a "very different place" mentally compared to his previous stint. Root initially captained England for a record 64 Tests, securing a record 28 wins before stepping down in April 2022. His departure followed a challenging period, including a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and navigating COVID-19 restrictions, which he admitted took a significant toll on his health.

Despite his past struggles with the captaincy, Root expressed no hesitation when offered the opportunity to return by incoming head coach Stephen Fleming. Fleming's appointment was a key motivator for Root's decision. The 35-year-old Sheffield-born cricketer will commence his second period as full-time captain against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19. He had previously served as interim captain in June when Ben Stokes was unavailable.
