Russia Accuses Telegram Founder Pavel Durov of Terrorism; He Responds Defiantly

Pavel Durov, the Russian-born founder and CEO of the messaging app Telegram, is facing accusations from Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) of collaborating in alleged terrorist activities. The FSB announced its intention to place Durov on international wanted lists, escalating tensions between the Kremlin and the tech mogul.

Durov, who also holds French, UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis citizenship, responded to the allegations with a defiant post on X, formerly Twitter, featuring an image of him giving the middle finger. He has consistently positioned himself as a defender of free speech, previously denouncing Kremlin attempts to restrict Telegram as an attack on this principle.

This development occurs as the Kremlin intensifies its efforts to tighten control over the internet and digital communications. These actions are seen in the context of upcoming parliamentary elections in September and growing public weariness over the four-year war in Ukraine and its economic consequences.

Durov, who founded Telegram with his brother Nikolai in 2013 after previously co-founding Russia's largest social network, VKontakte, left Russia in 2014 and is now based in Dubai. He has previously stated that Dubai is the ideal location for a neutral platform like Telegram to uphold user privacy and free expression. Forbes estimates his net worth at $6.6 billion.
