Russia counts 24 million family units, with focus on boosting birth rate

Russia currently counts nearly 24 million family units, with approximately 16 million of these households including children, according to Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova.

Golikova stated that over three million families in Russia are raising three or more children. This figure represents a 1.5-fold increase over the past five years, indicating a growing trend in larger families. The government is actively promoting policies aimed at supporting these families and encouraging a higher birth rate.

Currently, in our country there are approximately 24 million families, of which about 16 million have children. More than three million families are raising three or more children.

To this end, a new state aid program has been launched, which has already seen over one million applications. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Russian government, announced by President Vladimir Putin, to foster "traditional values" and address the country's demographic crisis. The crisis is exacerbated by a declining birth rate, influenced by wartime uncertainties and a demographic "hole" resulting from lower birth rates in the 1990s.

The Russian authorities are employing various measures to reverse the sharp decline in births. Beyond financial incentives for larger families, the government has also enacted legislation prohibiting the promotion of "childfree" ideology, which advocates for the right of women not to have children. These efforts underscore the government's focus on population growth and family support.
