Russia Denies Responsibility for Leipzig Drone Incident, Cites 'Hysteria'

Russia has vehemently denied any involvement in a drone incident at Leipzig Airport, characterizing the accusations as a "staged provocation" designed to serve the interests of Kyiv and European political establishments. The Russian embassy in Berlin issued a statement expressing concern over what it called a "new wave of anti-Russian hysteria" in Germany.

The embassy further stated that the greatest danger facing Germany is not alleged "hybrid attacks" from Moscow, which it claims do not exist. Instead, it argued, the real threat comes from politicians enthusiastically developing scenarios for an imminent war with Russia and seeking German participation. The embassy suggested that such reports are merely a means for European politicians to justify their support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held discussions with members of the federal government regarding the suspected drone attack. The National Security Council exchanged views on the incident, which occurred on August 4, 2026. The Chancellor remains in constant communication with the Interior Minister and other government officials.

The drone, laden with explosives, was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Tuesday evening. Due to the gravity of the situation, the federal prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation, as it handles cases involving serious threats to national security, such as terrorist attacks. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt had previously described the event as a "hybrid attack scenario," not ruling out foreign powers as perpetrators. The incident has sparked a broad debate about drone defense capabilities at critical infrastructure sites.
