Russia drills NATO defense near Norway, missile reportedly lands in Norwegian zone

Russia recently conducted military exercises simulating a defense against a NATO attack on the strategically important Kola Peninsula, situated near the border with Norway. The drills, which took place around the end of July and beginning of August, involved simultaneous attacks from both sea and land targets located approximately 300 km away.

The naval component of the exercises included the missile cruiser Slava, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, and an Oscar II-class nuclear submarine. These vessels, along with the Bastion coastal missile system, launched a barrage of missiles, including Kalibr, Vulkan, Granit, and Oniks. According to the Barents Observer, a supersonic Oniks missile fired from the Rybachy Peninsula reportedly flew for six minutes before landing 150-200 km north of Norway's Varanger Peninsula, within its exclusive economic zone.

Norwegian armed forces closely monitored the preparations and execution of these Russian military drills. The Kola Peninsula serves as the primary base for Russia's Northern Fleet and its nuclear submarine fleet. The Norwegian government has previously stated that the region hosts the world's largest nuclear arsenal, primarily aimed at NATO countries.

The exercises underscore the heightened military activity and tensions in the Arctic region, particularly concerning the proximity to NATO's borders. The reported landing of a Russian missile within Norway's economic zone, though monitored, highlights the potential for miscalculation or unintended escalation in such drills.
