Russia recalls ambassador to London, accuses UK of 'confrontation'

Russia has recalled its ambassador to London, Andrei Kelin, who departed on July 21 after more than seven years, signaling a significant chill in diplomatic relations. Moscow has not put forward a successor, leaving the embassy without a chief of mission and raising questions about a potential official downgrade of ties.

A Russian embassy spokesperson stated that Kelin made considerable efforts to maintain communication channels but accused the British government of opting for a "path of confrontation." The spokesperson expressed hope that a more constructive and respectful dialogue could be restored if the UK reconsiders its policies toward Russia.

The decision to leave the diplomatic mission without a full-fledged head, or to manage it through a chargé d'affaires, indicates that Moscow no longer views high-level dialogue with Britain as a priority. This reduction in diplomatic representation is a recognized method for a state to express strong disapproval of another government's policies without severing ties completely.

This diplomatic maneuver follows Russia's stern warning to Britain regarding Ukraine's alleged use of British-made drones for attacks within Russian territory. Moscow accuses London of escalating the conflict and threatens that continued military support for Kyiv will have repercussions.
